Historic achievement
Jet, Dec 26, 1994
When the $9.7 million School of Social Work is completed in June 1995 at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, it will be the first academic building on campus named for a Black achiever, Dr. John B. Turner, dean emeritus. He will share the honor with former CBS News Correspondent Charles Kuralt and philanthropist John A.
"Jack" Tate, chairman of the school's advisory board. The Turner-Kuralt-Tate Building is a special tribute to Turner, who established the school's first development office, and moved the school forward to a ranking of 12th among the 120 U.S. graduate social work programs. School of Social Work Dean Richard Edwards said Dr. Turner's "wisdom, leadership...won him wide respect as one of this university's great African-American leaders and visionaries."
