Detroit Lions star running back Barry Sanders and Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre were both named Most Valuable Player in the NFL. This was the first tie vote in 37 years.

Each player received 18 first place votes from The Associated Press balloting of 48 sportswriters and broadcasters.

This was the first MVP award for Sanders, who also won the offensive player of the year vote. Sanders led the league in rushing and became the third running back in NFL history to rush for more than 2,000-yards in a season (Jet, Jan. 12). He also finished this season with a record 14 straight 100-yard games.

Favre is the first three-time winner in the 41-year history of the MVP award; he won in 1995 and 1996. He led the league in touchdown passes for the third year in a row.

Denver Broncos running back Terrell Davis finished third and San Francisco 49ers quarterback Steve Young was in fourth place.
