Jazz drummer Oliver Jackson dies of heart failure at 61

Jazz drummer Oliver Jackson, who played with such jazz greats as Lionel Hampton, Kenny Burrell and Benny Goodman, died recently of heart failure at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.
Mr.Jackson, who grew up in Detroit, joined up with drummer Eddie Locke in 1949 and they worked together under the name of Bop and Locke until 1953. He joined prominent jazz saxophonist Yusef Lateef in 1953.
the late 1950's he performed at the Metropole and Embers in New York City and introduced a swing style of drumming to his repertoire.
In 1959, he began a three-year affiliation with Charlie Shavers, then worked with Hampton, Goodman, Burrell and Buck Clayton.
For the last 10 years, Mr. Jackson has appeared with Oscar Peterson and as part of George Wein's Newport Jazz Festival All-stars touring the world.
He is survived by his wife Mildred, and a daughter, Alexis.
