Apartment building where Cicely Tyson grew up is named in her honor

Emmy award-winning actress Cicely Tyson recently returned to her native New York for ceremonies in which her childhood home was named in her honor.

Ms. Tyson helped dedicate the building and three others that had, recently been renovated for low-income residents by the SFDS Development Corporation.

Ms. Tyson lived in the apartment building in East Harlem from age 9 to 17, the New York Times reported.

"To have some place memorialized in that manner means more to me than I can verbalize," she told the Times.

"It is not a structure that glorifies Cicely Tyson. It is a structure that is providing homes for the homeless and low-income people, and that is simply the most rewarding thing that I can have happen."
