Irvin stands trial after judge's ruling on drug charges
Jet, July 15, 1996
Dallas Cowboys star wide receiver Michael Irvin's trial is underway after a Dallas judge ruled to reject several motions to have evidence suppressed and the indictment thrown out.
Criminal District Court Judge Manny Alvarez ruled on the defense motion after a hearing. The judge also issued a gag order preventing all parties from talking about the case.
Jury selection began in the case on the day following the rejection of the motions.
Irvin's original indictment was thrown out (Jet, July 1), interrupting his trial on the grounds that one of the Dallas County grand jurors returning the indictment lives outside of Dallas County.
Irvin faces felony cocaine possession and misdemeanor marijuana possession charges, and he could receive up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
