Former pro quarterback Doug Williams, who led the Washington Redskins to victory in Super Bowl XXII, has been named Morehouse College's head football coach.

He comes to Morehouse in Atlanta from the National Football League's (NFL) Jacksonville Jaguars, where he served as a college scout.

"Morehouse's mission is parallel to my expectations as a football coach," Williams said. "It is important to me to develop a program that will attract scholar-athletes and produce a championship team."

Williams is responsible for planning and implementing strategies to enhance recruiting efforts and team performance.

Super Bowl XXII's most valuable player began his playing days under Eddie Robinson at Grambling State University, where he was a first team All-American.

In Super Bowl XXII Williams set records for most yards passing in a game (340), most yards passing in a quarter (228), most touchdown passes (4) and longest completion (80 yards). He retired after the 1989 season.
