Norman B. Flanagan, 90, father of Jet senior editor, dies

Funeral services were recently held in Chicago for Norman B. Flanagan, the father of JET Senior Editor Sylvia P. Flanagan, who recently died at the University of Chicago, Bernard . Mitchell Hospital. He was 90 years old.

Born in Chicago, he was the son of Sedes and Elizabeth Patterson Flanagan. He was a U.S. postal employee until his retirement in 1977.

A product of the Chicago public schools, he graduated from Wendell Phillips High School in the city and was an extremely gifted musician. He played the piano, banjo, guitar and violin. For several years he played in local bands throughout the city.

Flanagan married Lucretia Mohamed in April 1943, and they had five children. A devout family man, he reared his children alone following Lucretia's death in November 1964.

In May 1984, he married Louise Ann Murray of Chicago.

In addition to his daughter, Sylvia, and wife, Louise Ann, he is survived by three sons, Norman J., Theodore and Victor; daughter Eileen Bradley, and a stepson, Ricardo Mohamed. He is also survived by a host of grandchildren, great-grand-children, nieces, and other relatives and friends.

Services were held at Unity Funeral Parlors, Inc. with the Rev. Fred Cherry officiating. Interment was held in St. Mary's Cemetery in Chicago.
