Mo Vaughan pleads innocent to drunk driving charge

Red Sox first baseman Mo Vaughn has pleaded innocent to charges of drunk driving.

Vaughn, the 1995 American League MVP, was arrested and charged with operating under the influence of alcohol and failing to stay in his lane. Police said his 1997 Ford pickup rolled onto its roof after it hit an empty Ford Escort in the breakdown lane of an interstate near Boston at 2:15 a.m.

Vaughn reportedly refused to take a breath analysis test, according to the state Registry of Motor Vehicles Legal Counsel Andrew Padellaro.

He was released on bail.

Vaughn is also in the middle of negotiations with the Sox to extend his three-year, $18.5 million contract, which expires after the 1998 season.
