Talk show queen Oprah Winfrey and superstar singer-actress Whitney Houston were among the big winners during the recent airing of the 24th Annual People's Choice Awards. Academy Award-winning actress Whoopi Goldberg was honored with a lifetime achievement award during the gala, which was held at the Santa Monica Airport, the Barker Hangar, in Santa Monica, CA.
Winfrey was named Favorite Female Performer In A TV Series for "The Oprah Winfrey Show." Houston was voted Favorite Female Musical Performer. In a two-way tie, Houston shared the title with country star Reba McEntire, who also co-hosted the ceremony along with actor Ray Romano.
A highlight of the evening was Goldberg's receiving the lifetime achievement award. Her 20-year entertainment career includes more than 20 films, five seasons on TV's "Star Trek: The Next Generation," and co-hosting HBO's "Comic Relief," which has raised millions for homeless agencies.
Veteran crooner Tom Jones serenaded Goldberg with his hit She's A Lady while Goldberg blushed and fought back tears as she made her way to the stage to accept her honor.
The People's Choice Awards are voted by a Gallup Poll of the American public.
