Beyond Category: The Life and Genius of Duke Ellington. - book reviews
Black Enterprise, Feb, 1994 by Herb Boyd
In 1993, the Smithsonian mounted an exhibition, Beyond Category: The Musical Genius of Duke Ellington, with John Edward Hasse as its curator. Drawing on this collection and other sources, Hasse has assembled a book on Ellington (1899-1974) that provides a nearly definitive discussion of the man and his music.
After setting the stage for Ellington's formative years, Hasse establishes a format that gives the reader a privileged position to watch Ellington solve one musical problem after the other. One dilemma Elington solved early on was how to please knowledgeable jazz aficionados without losing his growing mainstream appeal. The answer was to use this appeal to advance his musical interests. He used a similar technique to balance the roles of bandleader and composer.
Ellington may have encountered some daunting personal problems--and the author mentions a few in passing--but when it came to musical obstacles, he gracefully hurdled them all.
