Canned Sardines

I would like to comment on the superb article in the April 1991 issue of FDA Consumer entitled, "Osteoporosis Treatment Advances." The article was well written and informative. I was extremely pleased to see that canned sardines were included in the chart listing calcium sources as well as being included in the picture.

Now the bad news. I was dismayed that the picture ... displayed a can of European canned sardines rather than domestic canned sardines. To a person familiar with the product, it is evident that the fish are of the sprat family, which are caught in European waters, and that the container is a steel, keyopen style, which is no longer in use in the U.S. canned sardine industry.
