Yes to true freedom

I loved Ralph R. Reiland's "War, Theocrats, and All That" ("The Popular Condition," January/February 2002). Yes to art, literature, kissing, and fashion. Yes to free thought and enterprise. Yes to the F-16s, too. I'm all for self-defense.

One more yes: to the embattled, endangered, heroic artists and intellectuals of the Arab/Muslim world who have been the first and most bloodied victims of the theocrats. Yes to Salman Rushdie. Yes to the slain Tahar Djaout, and yes to the springtime of reason that he longed for.
