Were readers paying attention? - letters to the editor

Humanist, March-April, 2003 by Mary Beaty

I'm quite confused about why you printed the letter in the January/February 2003 issue of the Humanist from the guy in Colorado in support of Bush's terrorist war. After your excellent series of articles, it seems bizarre to give prominent print space to these tired arguments of Karl Rove and Ari Fleischer with no rebuttal. Maybe all your other readers agree with your war analysis articles to such an extent that no one wrote to praise you, or you just want to see if we're reading the magazine.

Rummy's war has been condemned by: the Pope, the Archibishop of Canterbury, Nelson Mandela, Archibishop Tutu, Jimmy Carter--the list goes on. Awareness of the lies is growing, whether Clarence Williams is aware of it or not. It's just that in this world of Fleischer controlled media, I had hoped that you might have balanced such a predictable screed with other letters, an editorial response, or some facts. I'm sure you had your reasons, but the left is scrupulous in promoting opposing points of view; the right understands this tendency and exploits it neatly.
