"Atheist" was "obscene or objectionable" - Worth Noting - Brief Article

Humanist, May-June, 2002 by Karen Ann Gajewski

* Efforts to get a Gainesville, Florida, atheist to turn in his license plate were thwarted in March. Prompted by complaints that the plate reading "Atheist" was "obscene or objectionable," the Department of Motor Vehicles had ordered Steven Miles to ship it back. However, the ensuing public outcry--including objections by the ACLU, some clergy, as well as an article in the St.

Petersburg Times--caused the DMV to reverse its position and establish a committee to review all complaints before arbitrarily yanking a tag.
