Single-sex classrooms and schools - Worth Noting - Brief Article

Humanist, Sept-Oct, 2002 by Karen Ann Gajewski

* The U.S. Department of Education wants to modify Title IX--the thirty-year-old and equal education mandate--in order "to establish single-sex classrooms and schools at the elementary and secondary levels." This initiative is a followup to a provision sponsored by Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson (Republican--Texas), inserted into H.R. 1--the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. Hutchinson tried for several years to get such an initiative adopted but was vigorously opposed by feminists and prominent education associations.
