> The constitutional ideal of an independent judiciary has come under increasing attack from the right. At the federal level, fundamentalist groups have sought impeachments of federal judges, delayed action for years on nominations of new judges, and promoted restrictive legislation. But similar efforts are now afoot at the state level, as the religious right uses political endorsements, campaign donations, and push polls to influence judicial elections.
