* On September 23, California Governor Gray Davis signed SB 1661 establishing landmark family leave legislation. The new Family Temporary Disability Insurance becomes a benefit under the state's existing disability insurance program and will allow up to six weeks' paid leave (at 55 percent of their full salary) for individuals caring for a severely ill or injured relative or life partner, or for a new child (either through birth, adoption, or foster placement). The benefit takes effect July 1, 2004.
