Updates - growing opposition to genetically modified food caused Monsanto to cancel part of its marketing program - Brief Article

Sierra, Jan, 2000

TERMINATOR BITES THE DUST. In a victory for opponents of genetically modified (GM) food, Monsanto announced in October that it would drop its plans to market "Terminator" technology, which turns crop seeds sterile. The Terminator, which the biotech giant described as a "gene protection system," would have made it impossible for farmers to replant crops without buying a new batch of seeds from--you guessed it--Monsanto.

Friends of the Earth called the decision "a good first step," but said the issue will not go away: "Monsanto still needs to understand the depth of public opposition to GM foods."
