Lest We Forget - environmental policies of George W. Bush and Al Gore - Brief Article

Sierra, Jan, 2001

So that readers could hold our 43rd president accountable for environmental promises made during the 2000 campaign, Sierra planned to print several salient quotes from the president-elect. But with the outcome of the election up in the air at press time, we instead present you with a claim from each candidate. Each assures us he'll be the environment's best possible steward over the next four years. It's up to Sierra Club members to remember the promises--and make sure our new president delivers.

"For twenty-four years I have never backed down or given up on the environment, and I never will in my whole life. I guarantee it!"

--Al Gore Madison, Wisconsin, October 26, 2000

"Prosperity will mean little if we leave to future generations a world of polluted air, toxic lakes, and vanished forests.... The solution is not to eliminate the federal role in protecting the environment, the solution is reform--reform that sets high standards."

--George W. Bush Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, April 3, 2000
