The Elwha River on Washington's Olympic Peninsula once produced a run of magnificent 100-pound king salmon. But early in the 20th century, two dams cut off all but five miles of the river from spawning fish. Today those big kings are just the stuff of legends. Unconquering the Last Frontier chronicles the movement to dislodge those dams and restore the Elwha to some semblance of its former glory. Narrated by Native American actor Gary Farmer, the film highlights the injustices done to the Lower Elwha Klallam people who relied on the salmon for sustenance, both physical and spiritual, and who paid the price for the dams' cheap electricity.
