The answers are …

Sierra, July-August, 2002

The answers to our March/April "Southern Exposure" quiz can now be revealed:

1. The dogwood tree was likely named so because its bark was used to treat mangy canines in England. (The term may also be a corruption of "dagwood," trees used to make skewers or daggers.)

2. In addition to habitat loss, vehicle collisions kill many Florida panthers; government agencies build underpasses and fences to protect them. (We also accepted loss of genetic diversity/breeding programs as an answer.)

3. Longleaf forests can produce commercially valuable pine straw mulch.

4. Atlantic loggerhead turtles sleep in the open ocean or under rocky ledges.

5. Southern Appalachian flora is prolific because of high moisture from the area's heavy rain and many waterfalls.

The winner, chosen in a random drawing of correct entries, will receive a gift certificate for a Sierra Club outing for two. For the name of the winner (who has already been notified), send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to Sierra.
