Perhaps the chairman of the NBAF board of directors, Ingrid Saunders Jones, said it best: "This premier event allows each of us to behold, become and blossom across cultural, ethnic and geographic boundaries."

The Studioplex and the Atlanta University Center are only short taxicab rides from downtown Atlanta, and both are accessible via public transportation. NBAF performances won't be confined to just those two areas; there will also be performances at some of the city's other theaters and concert halls, in conjunction with other arts organizations.

This year's festival and its theme, "Artists as Agents of Change," are meant to change the way people think. Performers include Ashford and Simpson, Maya Angelou, Sweet Honey in the Rock, the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company and the Chuck Davis African American Dance Ensemble; plays include Ain't Nothin' But the Blues and Blood Knot; exhibits include "To Conserve a Legacy" and "When the Spirit Moves."
