Major Taylor: The Extraordinary Career of a Champion Bicycle Racer. - book reviews

American Visions, Feb-March, 1997 by Joanne Harris

"It is difficult for us today to reach back in our imagination to re-create the thrill and excitement of bicycle track racing between 1890 and 1910. Yet it was, nearly 100 years ago, a hugely popular and surprisingly modern sport. Among spectator sports in the United States during those two decades, it was certainly as popular as, if not more popular than, baseball, boxing or horse racing." Born in 1878 in Indianapolis, Taylor overcame physical challenges and racial adversity to become a world champion in 1899.

Ten years of research and extensive interviews with Taylor's 91-year-old daughter inform this work, which is an immense aid in re-creating the thrill.
