The Making of an Afro-American: Martin Robison Delany. - book reviews

American Visions,  Feb-March, 1997  by Joanne Harris

Frederick Douglass said of his friend and sometimes rival, "I thank God for making me a man, but Delany thanks Him for making him a black man." The grandson of an African prince and the son of a slave. Delany was an accomplished explorer, doctor, orator, ethnologist, editor and writer who achieved many firsts.

He was one of the first three blacks admitted to Harvard Medical School. He was the first black to hold field grade rank of U.S. Army major during the Civil War. He published one of the first black newspapers in the United States. This is a simple account of a stunning life.
