The Palm of my Heart: Poetry by African-American Children

American Visions,  Feb-March, 1998  by Monica Dyer Rowe

edited by Davida Adedjouma and illustrated by Gregory Christie (Lee & Low Books. 1996. $15-95)--This compilation of poems written by 20 African-American children, ages 8 to 14, is a glorious testimony to the creative spirit of the young. Organized and edited by writer, actor and teacher Davida Adedjouma, the project stemmed from the author's "Writing Between the Lines" workshop for children from the Inner City Youth League and the African-American Academy for Accelerated Learning program in Minneapolis.

The poems are both simple and thoughtful; each one is a celebration of black culture, pride and beauty. Complementing the words is the striking artistry of newcomer Gregory Christie. A recipient of the 1997 Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor Award, Christie uses a dark, vibrant color scheme as the backdrop to his angular human figures. As a result, each page of poetry has a distinct but cohesive voice. (Christie's second book, Richard Wright and the Library Card, was released last fall.)
