American Visions, April-May, 1995 by Bridgette A. Lacy
Raleigh has been the state capital since 1788, and much has changed--for the better. When today's visitors tire of tracing the city's black heritage, they and their children have the opportunity to stroll through the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences; wander around Historic Oakwood, a neighborhood that features outstanding examples of Victorian architecture. visit the Joel Lane House, which dates back to 1760 and is the city's oldest house; and check out the North Carolina Museum of Art. For those with a car and more time on their hands, Umstead State Park and Jordan Lake Recreational Area are within reach.
