WE SALUTE

... the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) for taking a stand on Internet blocking software and how it's used in public libraries. Working on behalf of an eclectic group of plaintiffs, the ACLU is suing Loudon County, Va., for requiring its library patrons to use content filters whenever they search the Web. The watchdog group correctly argues that "by using blocking software to implement the policy, the library board is in fact removing books from the shelves of the Internet" and violating the Constitution.

WE DISPUTE

... GeoCities for performing a Clintonesque minuet around the truth in promising to protect the privacy of its customers and then selling their demographic information to marketers. According to the Federal Trade Commission, the popular Web hosting service informed its users that optional information such as income, educational level, and marital status would not be released, but it was. As part of its settlement with the FTC, GeoCities now posts a prominent privacy statement specifying how it intends to use all personal data.
