CyberPower 500SL

IT'S THE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER, WHEN brownouts and power surges can stop your workday cold. Better protect your home office with an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) like the CyberPower 500SL ($80; CyberPower Systems, 612-403-9500, www. cyberpowersystems.com).

The CyberPower 500SL provides three battery-powered plugs to keep your PC, monitor, or other must-run equipment going long enough to save files and shut down properly. Three surge-only plugs shield lesser devices from wild current, and a telcom jack protects your modem. LEDs indicate status and warnings, and CyberPower's PowerPanel software governs it all, with an easy-to-use interface.

We typically got 9.5 minutes of runtime for a desktop computer with a 17-inch monitor and a printer--right in line with the company's claims of 8 to 12 minutes. A full recharge takes about 8 hours. Price, however, is what sets the CyberPower UPS apart; comparable desktop UPSes cost $40 to $60 more.
