New and Notable Notebooks

Balancing weight and functionality has been difficult for portable-computer manufacturers. It's not easy squeezing everything in a computer down to the size of a notebook. Today, there are more than a dozen notebook PCs available with hard-disk drives, along with many other impressive features--both standard and optional. A good example of this tiny-but-powerful technology is the 20-MHz 386SX Compaq LTE 386s/20, complete with RAM cache. The four-pound, 286-based CompuAdd Companion; Sharp PC-6220; and TI TravelMate 2000 are promising challengers, and AST recently set a new price/performance level with their Exec series of notebook PCs, offering both a 12-MHz 286 and 20-MHz 386SX.
