Dell's noteworthy notebook - Dell Computer Corp's Dell System 320N notebook computer - product announcement

Home Office Computing, June, 1991

The Dell System 320N looks just like any other 20-MHz 386SX0based notebook. At $3,399 (direct sales; no discount), it includes a 30MB hard-disk drive, VGA display, and 3.5-inch floppy disk drive. However, I soon became aware of its impressive attributes.

Its 8.5-by-11-inch footprint is smaller than most other full-function notebooks' 10-by-12-inch footprint. This may not seem significant at first glance, but the smaller size will come in handy when you're struggling to squeeze the unit into an overnight bag. The autoresume feature is another nice touch, putting the computer "to sleep" when you close the cover and waking the unit up--so it's ready to go--when you open the cover. The keyboard has a nice touch as well.

Overall, the Dell System 320N is a solid unit backed by a knowledgeable technical-support team and one year of on-site service. I recommend it to anyone who is looking for a fast 386SX-based notebook. A 60MB version is available for $3,699, and Dell also offers a 12-MHz 286 notebook, the 212N, with either a 20MB ($2,399) or 40MB ($2,699) hard-disk drive. Dell, (800) 937-1470; (512) 338-4400
