Tandy breaks out the RLX - Tandy Corp's new 1000 RLX computer - product announcement

Home Office Computing, June, 1991

Looking for a reasonably priced computer? The Tandy 1000 RLX is based on a 10-MHz 80286 microprocessor and comes standard with a 40MB hard-disk drive, VGA support, and a 3.5-inch 1.44MB floppy-disk drive. Other standard features include a parallel and a serial port, stereo headphones, and a microphone jack. The mouse is also standard and comes with its own mouse port so that you don't have to sacrifice a COM port. List price for the system without a monitor is $1,200, and a color VGA monitor will cost you an additional $400. This system, although a 286, has an 8-bit data path as opposed to the typical 16-bit data path--translating into slower than average overall performance.

The 1000 RLX, like the 1000 RL, is designed to be left on all the time--but unlike other fanless computers, the casing does not get warm. Tandy claims--and delivers--"whisper quiet" operation. The 24 built-in DeskMate (Tandy's own graphical user interface) and DeskMate Home Organizer applications let you get to work immediately, offering solutions from organizing your address files to figuring out monthly business budgets.
