Kelly Simo, a 12th-grade student at Anderson Collegiate in Whitby, Ontario, was suspended from school for a day for jaywalking. Simo claims she crossed with the light on her way home from school. But setting innocence aside, she wants to know how the school can punish her for something she did a block from the campus after school hours.
Officials told her mother the school day doesn't end until the student is back in the house. Asked if the school would be liable if her daughter had been hit by a car or mugged or raped after she left school, they replied, "Let's not get carried away."
