Insight on the News,  March 20, 2000  by John Elvin

* Three percent of those responding to a national survey said they are most concerned about foreign affairs, and 1 percent said their biggest worry is the environment. Major concerns are sprawl, traffic and crime (Pew Center for Civic Journalism poll).

* According to 58 historians who were asked to rate U.S. presidents according to various criteria, President Clinton comes in fifth in terms of "economic management." Of the 41 presidents who have held office, he ranks 41st in "moral authority" (C-Span survey in conjunction with its "American Presidents" series).

* The decline in the homicide rate may be attributable in part to the decline in marriages, a researcher says, pointing to the drop in the statistical murder-rate category that includes spouses, family members and intimate partners (Richard Rosenfeld, professor of criminology, in a speech to the American Association for the Advancement of Science).
