* The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that computers and other electronic equipment account for about 222 million tons of trash per year in the United States, a concern due in part to the lead, mercury and other heavy metals the devices contain (report by NewsFactor Network on "TechnoTrash").

* Job stress due to understaffing brought on by retirements is causing a greater number of federal employees to seek retirement as they become eligible (General Accounting Office study of the federal brain drain via Government Executive magazine).

* Sixteen percent of applicants for Defense Department jobs have been recommended for security clearances despite histories of drug, alcohol or financial problems that have not been noted in their files as resolved (General Accounting Office study of security-clearance procedures in a sampling of 3,800 applicants at the Pentagon, cited in USA Today).
