"It is an outrage."

-- Frank LaMere, an American Indian and Democratic activist, denounces a resolution passed by the GOP platform committee in Washington state calling for abolishing tribal governments. The author of the resolution, John Fleming, hopes to see it included in the national Republican platform and wants it backed by military force.

"It's an old habit."

-- A Russian citizen comments on the prevalence of bribery as a way of dealing with officers of the State Traffic Control Inspectorate.

"Harass, harm, pursue, hunt, shoot, wound, kill, trap, capture, or collect...."

-- These are things you cannot do to a Pacific salmon or steelhead that might wander on to your property, under rules issued by the National Marine Fisheries Service. Shouldn't there also be a rule requiring landowners to go down to the stream each evening and make sure Uncle Sam's little pets are properly tucked in? Walt Disney would have wanted it that way, and we seem hell-bent on establishing his cartoon-world vision as our reality.
