"The mountaineer is the only person left in the ethnic shooting gallery that it is still all right to shoot at. In this time of cultural sensitivity, we condemn anyone immediately when they use the `N' word, and well we should. Well, the `H' word is just as bigoted."

-- Sen. Zell Miller (D-Ga.) defends mountaineers against an alleged slur by Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfell, who denied using the word "hillbilly." Actually, it would be a peculiar shooting gallery that featured mountaineers as targets, since their traditional inclination is to shoot back.

"Several stories in, recent days about Rep. Gary Condit have failed to mention he is a Democrat representing a district in California."

-- A correction issued by the Atlanta Constitution appearing about the time the Media Research Center began pointing out that the elite media, prompt to identify Republicans in difficulty, rarely mentioned Condit's party affiliation.
