Blase about liberty

0 Comments | Insight on the News, Oct 1, 2002

I asked some friends of mine if they ever had heard of the USA PATRIOT Act [see "Losing the War for Civil Liberties," Sept. 16]. Of the 101 asked, not one had heard of the law. One said, "No, but I am not very political anyway." Another said, it was "the weapons system used to destroy `spuds' from Iraq." A missile against a potato?

Two of them I know better than others asked questions about it and I explained; they shook their heads telling me I was "crazy" and "the government wouldn't do that and I don't care if they do."

In my lifetime, I am witnessing what my history readings have told me our country is against, and fought against for most of the century.

With my microexamination of my immediate surroundings, I see the fight is not over and the battlefield is under my feet.
