G'Day, World

While Bryson takes a decidedly personal approach to travel writing, he doesn't neglect history, politics and social issues -- he writes sympathetically about the continued plight of the Aborigines, for example. The appeal of In a Sunburned Country, however, is the author's sensibility, as sunny as the country he describes, and his amicable prose. Reading the book is like reading a letter from a good friend having a grand time in a wonderful place -- we wish we were there, and we almost are.
