Open eyes to immigration policy before it's too late

I think the media have been neglecting what well may be the next big issue in American politics: immigration [Fair Comment, Nov. 26]. With a population of 285 million (a 13 percent increase during the last decade) and a projection of more than 300 million by the next census, we rapidly are approaching a catastrophic demographic future.

We must seriously address the problem of immigration that is fueling this growth. The social, cultural and environmental costs are just too great to continue our suicidal immigration policies. And now we see the cost to national security of our casual attitude toward immigration.

We must get beyond the sentimental claptrap about the requirement for the United States to continue opening its doors to millions of aliens from all over the world. There has to be a rational limit to the population of this country.

I hope that INSIGHT will devote more space to a discussion of the effect that immigration is having on the fabric of American life.
