* Fifty-four percent of those polled believe that the Rev. Jesse Jackson was "just trying to get publicity for himself" in leading protests on behalf of students he calls the "Decatur Seven," who were expelled from a high school in the Illinois city of Decatur for brawling at a football game. Thirty-two percent said they believe Jackson cares deeply about the issue, and 14 percent said they weren't sure (Fox News/Opinion Dynamics).

* More Americans (17 percent) pick the Hawaiian Islands than any of the other 50 states as the place they most would like to visit on a vacation. California ranks second, and Alaska and Florida follow in a tie for third (the Gallup Organization).

* For those in the know, there are at least 18 different ways to tap a telephone (The Paranoid's Pocket GGuide by Cameron Tuttle, Chronicle Books).
