International child abduction deserving of more attention

Timothy W. Maier did a wonderful job with the article "Stolen Kids Become Pawns in Terror War" [Dec. 17]. He accurately told the public that there is a tragedy going on here in America, and it was a tragedy long before Sept. 11.

Our American children are being abducted to foreign lands. Some of the children were kidnapped by terrorists. I know this to be true because I am a "left-behind" parent of a child, Sarah Elgohary, taken to Egypt in 1997. I personally know other parents of abducted children. There are lots of us.

The government of the United States does little or nothing about this. The general public believes our powerful nation just has to ask for the return of our children and they will be on the next plane home. But that is not so.

Thanks to Maier and INSIGHT magazine, the American people finally are being made aware of international child abduction. Maier certainly did his homework on the abduction situation. He has put a spotlight on a very important issue, and I commend him for his hard work, accuracy, intelligence and human compassion.
