Smith ignores ideology, takes issue with both right and left

Who was it -- Matthew Arnold? -- who said we're caught between two worlds: one dead and the other unable to be born. My feeling is that we're in that period. So it's very, very frustrating, because if you're actually grappling with it, you find yourself in very dangerous waters.

But on the other hand, it is tremendously exciting, if you really feel like something is happening right around you, and you can't figure out what it is and why it is. It could come to a disastrous end, or it could be another great revival of America.
