In Texas, every Doggett has his day

Still, Lloyd Doggett is well-known and Popular in Austin and has "been tireless in keeping up his connections with the minority community," Prindle says. Many describe this as a safe seat for him but he says he's taking the challenge seriously. He jumped at the chance to turn a vote for him into a rejection of Gingrich's Republican revolution. "There's no doubt that the first vote that any member of Congress will pass in the next session will be on whether Newt continues," he says. "I don't think the people of Austin want to send him reinforcements."

Teresa Doggett walks the fence when it comes to Gingrich, aware that his high negative ratings could jinx moderate GOP candidates like her. "I think Newt is a bright individual, but I don't agree with everything he does and the way he does everything," she says. But, of course, she thinks the Democratic Doggett can't give Austin voters what they want. "They want new leadership that will help us all Pay lower taxes, better educate our kids and ensure access to high-paying jobs."
