Make aware, or scare?

Paulos suggested the media use a "kind of Richter scale" to measure the actual risks associated with a given activity. On such a scale, smoking, driving, catching the flu and riding a bicycle would be ranked as unsafe. In contrast, being stung by a bee, which kills one in 6 million Americans each year, would be rated as unpleasant but rarely life-threatening.
