Insight: You know from experience. It sounded like you had a tough job with so many children with special needs.

AMN: Yes, but the particulars of my family have been a real blessing for me. I've learned a lot. My husband and I grew up a lot, too, from what we learned from our children just as most parents do. And part of that experience was the diversity of our family.

I can say I love this job -- but, you know, if the voters decide I'm not going to keep it, I think my life will still be wonderful. Who I really am is the mother of six kids and Woody's wife.

Personal Bio

Northup has had traditional values from the beginning.

Personal: Born Jan. 1, 1948, Louisville. Roman Catholic.

Family: Husband Robert Wood Northup; six children, age 15-26.

Education: Bachelor's degree, economics and business, St. Mary's College, South Bend Ind.

Career: Represented the 32nd legislative district in the Kentucky House of Representatives, 1987-1996, teacher.

Political mentors: House Speaker Newt Gingrich of Georgia; House Appropriations Chairman Bob Livingston of Lousisiana; Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.

Famous sibling: Mary T. Meagher won three gold medals in swimming in the 1988 Olympics.

What is it like to be a lawmaker: "I kiddingly say it makes scrubbing up the kitchen floor look fun."

Famous quote: A large family and Democrats have a lot in common: Teenagers and Democrats are always happy spending other people's money."
