Milk no MLK

I read with much interest Kyle Buchanan's article on the new Harvey Milk film currently in production ["The Gay M.L.K." February 26]. It was good, but I think the title is wrong. Not to diminish Mr. Milk's accomplishments, I believe that any comparison to Martin Luther King belongs to the Reverend Troy Perry. I recently saw a documentary at the Palm Springs Film Festival on the life of Perry titled Call Me Troy, and to say the least, the man was a visionary. He fought for our rights in the same manner as MLK, using nonviolence and demonstrations to break down stereotypes in a day when being gay was cause for lobotomy, jail, or death. He's also been doing it consistently for 40 years.

I think gays would rather sweep Perry under a rug because of his relationship to religion, but The Advocate should know better--after all, it helped Troy get his start.
Was Harvey Milk great? Yes. Was he MLK? Not by a long shot.
