No question where Pat stands
Advocate, The, July 18, 2000
Pat Buchanan doesn't seem too concerned about his antigay reputation. If anything, the Reform Party presidential hopeful is trying to bolster it.
In early June he came out in defense of Delaware party chairman and Buchanan backer William Shields, who compared openly gay party secretary Jim Mangia to "trash or dangerous biological waste."
But Shields's "biological waste" comment may have sounded like a better analogy to Buchanan than he let on. On June 12 USA Today reported that Buchanan had come up with a short list of potential running mates. Among those listed: Dr. Laura Schlessinger, who is currently a target of gay people's ire for referring to them as the result of a "biological error."
