Book ban stopped

Advocate, The,  Dec 21, 2004

The Solon, Iowa, school board shut down a few antsy parents who wanted to ban two gay-themed books front the district's eighth-grade curriculum. Am I Blue? deals with a boy's sexual identity; In the Time I Get is a story about a man dying of AIDS who is befriended by a teen.

Parents said the books perpetuated gay stereotypes, but eighth-grade teacher Sue Protheroe argued that the books actually promote tolerance.
