Navratilova cruises away from Rainbow
Tennis star Martina Navratilova has had difficulty attracting endorsements as an out lesbian, but that hasn't stopped her from holding those who use her name to a high standard. In March, Navratilova filed suit against Do Tell Inc., a company she helped form in 1995, in hopes of forcing it to stop using her name and image to promote its Rainbow Card. Without getting specific, she said she disapproves of the credit card's marketing, including its promotion on a television show that she said betrayed gays and lesbians.
The lawsuit came two weeks before the 48-year-old Navratilova--while playing doubles at the NASDAQ-100 Open in Mianti--announced she was becoming a spokeswoman for lesbian cruise line giant Olivia. She told The Nov York Times that the six-figure, one-year deal was the first she had gotten because she is gay. "We're a perfect match," she said.
