Exploitation on the high seas

Advocate, The,  April 26, 2005  by Wes Jackson

Your Editor's Letter ["The End of Exploitation," March/April 2005] was the most conscious-raising editorial addressed to travelers that I've ever read. In that vein, how about an expose on the cruise industry? Most--if not all--cruise operators register their ships in foreign ports, and thus dodge paying Uncle Sam their fair share of taxes, and in the bargain they pay their staff far less than minimum wage, skirt OSHA-type safety regulations, and offer little in terms of benefits.
